Pit Firing

Pit firing is an atmospheric process all of the colors and patterns are derived from the process and what is consumed in the fire. Items that are burned will turn to vapor and will swirl around the pieces in the pit. I use a variety of chemicals, copper wire, plant matter, salts and Miracle Gro. My pieces are burnished or polished wit terra sigalata then bisque fired. I sprinkle or spray chemicals on the piece add plant matter, copper wire, etc. then I wrap it in aluminum foil. I prep the pit with some saw dust and small pieces of wood. Pieces are the added and wood placed on top. I start the fire and add wood for about 3 hours. Then I just let the fire die down and take the pieces out when they have cooled enough.
